Exposed Aggregate

Often called the ‘king of driveway materials’, exposed aggregate is a popular outdoor surfacing solution for Australian homes.
Durable, colourful, and endlessly versatile, exposed aggregate driveways transform functional surfaces into lasting design statements that boost your property’s value.

WHAT IS EXPOSED CONCRETE?

Exposed aggregate concrete is a versatile concrete finish unlike traditional standard finish and other decorative styles. It is natural, seamless and coordinates perfectly with all types of building styles, be it brick, weatherboard, render or any other style.

It comes in a wide variety of natural stone colours that can be chosen from regular standard blends or combined to your personal choice.

Exposed aggregate is extremely hard wearing, low maintenance and is perfect for driveways, patios or any other outdoor area. Pavillion finish, which is a companion to exposed aggregate, is perfect for indoor or semi-indoor areas.

Exposed Aggregate Materials and Colours

Finish Options

The different colours, textures and effects which can be created using exposed aggregate are virtually limitless. Almost any type of stone or sand can be used to create an aggregate with varying sizes and grades used to create different effects.

Discover the various styles available for exposed aggregate driveways in Melbourne, each offering a unique look tailored to your aesthetic and functional needs.

Water Wash

Surface mortar is washed away with water and a broom (no chemicals) to achieve a classic exposed aggregate concrete finish. The texture of this finish is functional, durable, and eye-catching.

Sandblasting

Sandblasting exposes aggregate after the concrete has set to achieve an even, consistent finish, but may slightly dull aggregate colour and shape. It is ideal for steep driveways and vertical surfaces.

Pavilion Finish

After the driveway surface is ground down, an acid solution is used to remove cement around the aggregate. This creates a finer texture with improved grip, enhanced slip resistance and an elegant look.

Why Exposed Aggregate Driveways?

Exceptional Durability

Exposed aggregate driveways are built to last, easily handling heavy traffic and harsh weather without cracking or fading. This makes them ideal for high-use areas.

Low Maintenance

These driveways require minimal upkeep—regular cleaning and occasional sealing keep them fresh and stain-free, perfect for busy homeowners.

Aesthetic Versatility

Using various types of stones, sands, and even coloured glass, exposed aggregate driveways can be tailored to suit any style and enhance your home’s look.

Slip Resistance

The textured surface naturally resists slipping, adding safety in wet conditions, which is perfect for driveways and patios.

FAQs

How long does it take to install an exposed aggregate driveway?

Most installations take 3-5 days, depending on weather conditions and project size.

Can I customise the look of my exposed aggregate driveway?

You can choose from various aggregates, colours, and finishes to match your design preferences.

What sorts of designs and colours can I choose?

We can use almost any type of stone or sand to create aggregates, which means your colour and texture choices are virtually limitless. For example, we can mix quartz into an aggregate for a shiny and glossy finish, which can be further amplified with coloured glass. We can even achieve colours from chic neutrals to bold hues like emerald green and rose pink.

How often should I reseal my driveway?

We recommend resealing every 2-3 years to maintain its appearance and protection.

Is exposed aggregate suitable for sloped areas?

Absolutely! Its slip-resistant texture makes it ideal for slopes or high-traffic areas where safety is a priority.

Can you provide recommendations on exposed aggregate driveways?

We certainly can. If you’re unsure about what colour scheme and finish would best suit your home, the team at A Better Driveway will work with you to choose the right colour grade and base texture for a surfacing solution that complements the exterior of your property.
