Why Does Exposed Aggregate Concrete Crack?
There are plenty of things that can crack a concrete driveway in Melbourne over time; these are the usual suspects:
Freeze-thaw Cycles
Water seeps into small surface cracks, freezes in winter, and expands. Over time, that repeated pressure forces cracks to open wider. Melbourne doesn’t get extreme winters, but the cycle still happens.
Soil Washout and Settlement
If the ground beneath the slab erodes or wasn’t compacted properly to begin with, voids form underneath. With nothing supporting it, the concrete sinks and cracks under its own weight.
Heavy Vehicle Loads
Repeated stress from heavy vehicles damages weakened areas. A standard residential driveway isn’t designed for trucks or skips, and the concrete will show it eventually.
Tree Roots
Slow-growing roots can push up under a slab for years before anything shows on the surface.
Age
UV exposure, temperature swings, and general wear all add up, especially on driveways that haven’t been resealed regularly.
What Kind of Crack Is It?
The size and shape of the driveway crack tells you a lot. Here’s a quick reference:
| Crack Type | Width |
|---|---|
| Hairline | < 6mm |
| Medium | 6mm – 12mm |
| Large/Structural | > 12mm |
| Spalling | Surface area |
Hairline Cracks (under 6mm)
Very common and rarely structural on their own, but an open door for water. Left alone, they grow.
Medium Cracks (6mm to 12mm)
Something has shifted beneath the surface. Filling without looking into the cause is only a temporary fix.
Large or Structural Cracks (over 12mm)
Wide or uneven cracks are structural problems, not cosmetic ones. At this point, it’s worth considering whether resurfacing makes more sense than patching. See our article on resurfacing exposed aggregate driveways for more.
Spalling
Surface flaking where the aggregate comes away unevenly. Usually, water damage, poor sealing, or a mix issue from the original pour.
Can You Fix It Yourself?
Hairline cracks can be patched with a concrete filler from any hardware store, and for plain grey concrete, that’s often good enough. Exposed aggregate is different, as the repair has to look right and hold, which is where most attempts fall short.
To do it properly, you’d need a matching aggregate, a clear epoxy or polyurethane binder, and correct surface prep. Get any of those wrong, and the patch will be more visible than the crack was.
For a genuinely isolated hairline crack, an early application of clear sealant can prevent water from getting in and buy some time. Anything wider, or where the cause is unclear, is worth getting a professional eye on before anything else.
Why Exposed Aggregate Repairs Need a Professional
Repairing exposed aggregate concrete isn’t like patching plain grey. The stone mix, colour, and texture all have to match; the repair draws more attention than the crack did. A few things that catch people out:
- Matching the aggregate: The stone blend is specific to that original pour. Getting it close enough to be seamless takes experience.
- The binder: Off-the-shelf grey compound stands out badly. A clear polyurethane or epoxy binder is needed so the stone shows through.
- Surface prep: Skip it or get it wrong, and the new material won’t bond properly. A manageable crack can become a bigger job.
- Root cause: If drainage or soil movement caused the crack, filling it is cosmetic. It’ll open back up.
Getting it right the first time is cheaper than fixing a botched repair on top of the original problem.
When To Call Us
Water is patient. It works its way into small cracks, freezes, expands, and turns a cosmetic issue into a structural one. Get in touch with our Melbourne driveway team if you’re seeing any of these:
- Cracks wider than 6mm or uneven on either side
- Any section that has sunk or is heaving upward
- Cracking across multiple areas rather than one isolated spot
- A previous repair that has already failed
- A driveway over 15 years old with visible surface deterioration
- Stones are coming loose in patches
If the cracking is widespread, it’s worth reading about whether your driveway can be resurfaced before committing to individual repairs.
